Saturday 6th March 2010

Heathens 5 points

Huntingdon 2nd XV 27 points

Heathens suffered a home defeat on The Racecourse in fine but chilly conditions as Huntingdon deservedly consolidated their third place position in the Directors League of the Bombardier Wells Merit table .

The visitors got off to an early start with an unconverted try after only 5 minutes and then increased their lead with ten minutes of the half remaining when they crossed for a converted score leaving Heathens trailing by twelve unanswered points at the interval.

Huntingdon extended their lead with a well struck penalty just after the restart. The Artizan based Heathens were securing sufficient first phase possession at both the scrum and line out but were guilty of taking the ball too far with individuals becoming isolated which allowed the more youthful Huntingdon outfit to secure a good supply of second phase ball that their quicker backs exploited well. This resulted in Huntingdon consolidating their lead with tries on 22 and 27 minutes of the second half, one of which was converted.

The visitors scoring was restricted by some plucky defence from stand in fullback Tony Hazell who regularly took clean ball and tidied up a number of awkward position at the back. Heathens sole score came from a trademark strong run from their winger Tom Williams who beat a number of defenders on his way to an unconverted try that left Heathens ruing what might have happened if they had been able to provide some cleaner second phase ball instead of putting their half backs under continual pressure.

Next Saturday Heathens remain in Bombardier Wells Merit Table action when they travel to Leighton Buzzard to take on their third string fully aware that they need to put in a stronger team performance if they are to avoid conceding a league double.
